Sources and how we verify them

The information we use

• Official open data: for example the Hospital Authority's waiting times for new cases at specialist outpatient clinics, and the HKSAR Government Health Bureau's list of healthcare providers registered with eHealth, published through DATA.GOV.HK.
• Official registers and guidelines: for example the Medical Council of Hong Kong's List of Registered Medical Practitioners and List of Specialists, information from the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and primary care guidelines.
• Official websites of healthcare institutions: for example fee schedules, consultation hours and booking methods published by hospitals and clinics.
• Other public records: qualifications and consultation hours that doctors or clinics publish on public platforms, compiled by us and labelled "Compiled by us from public records" with the date checked.
• Information provided and confirmed directly by institutions.

How doctor and clinic information is verified

Doctor and clinic information pages are verified as follows, with each item labelled separately:

• Official open data: quoted directly from data published by the government or public bodies, with the publishing body named.
• Checked against official registers: for example, a doctor's registration and specialist qualification are checked against the Medical Council's registers, with the date of the check stated.
• Confirmed by the institution or its website: for information that changes often, such as fees and consultation hours, direct confirmation from the institution or its official website comes first, with the date stated.
• Compiled by us from public records: we first check the doctor against the Medical Council register, then confirm it is the same doctor by practice address or phone before listing qualifications or hours; where sources differ, the institution's own website and government platforms come first. Hours carry "please call before you go".

"Location" and "doctor" are verified separately

That a clinic address exists does not mean a particular doctor practises there. So on doctor and clinic information pages we label "location verified" and "doctor verified" separately; the fees and consultation hours of the same doctor at different locations will also be recorded separately and will not be applied to one another.

What we do not do

• We do not decide the order in which information is listed by ratings, page views or payment.
• We do not publish patient reviews: online reviews cannot easily be checked for whether the writer actually saw the doctor, so instead we list what you can check yourself, such as the register, qualifications and practice arrangements, with their sources and dates.
• Where information is incomplete, we do not estimate it ourselves; we state "please ask the clinic".

Updates and corrections

Each page lists the sources used and the date they were viewed, and shows the date of the last update. When we learn that a source has been updated, we revise the relevant pages and update the date; for example, Hospital Authority waiting times are updated quarterly, so we revise the related guides after the new data is published.

Doctor information we compile is re-checked against its sources regularly, and when a source changes, the page changes with it; what each update changed is on the 'Update log' page.
