How much do heart tests cost at each hospital?

The table below lists the common heart test fees published on the websites of the 13 Hong Kong private hospitals and medical centres checked by this site, not every institution in Hong Kong.

Compiled by this site: resting ECG about HK$550 to HK$740; exercise ECG about HK$2,600 to HK$4,240; 24-hour ECG about HK$2,600 to HK$3,780; echocardiogram about HK$2,090 to HK$4,850; coronary CT scan about HK$6,380 to HK$10,650.

How this list was put together: an institution is listed when it publishes this fee on its own website and this site has checked the figures against that fee schedule. The rows are in a fixed order, not in order of price; this site does not recommend any institution, the order says nothing about quality, and the list is not every institution in Hong Kong.

What is the difference between these tests?

According to Hong Kong Adventist Hospital – Stubbs Road, a resting ECG records the electrical changes of the heart's activity with an instrument while the patient lies flat; an exercise ECG has the patient exercise on a treadmill so that heart and lung function, blood pressure and ECG changes can be observed in real time.

According to St. Paul's Hospital, a 24-hour Holter ECG attaches electrode pads to the chest and connects a portable monitor that continuously records the ECG so that the heart rhythm can be analysed. Which test is done is decided by the doctor according to the case.

Some private hospitals have set fees for patients holding a Hospital Authority referral letter. For example, the CUHK Medical Centre Cardiology Centre lists: ECG HK$530, exercise ECG HK$2,500, 24-hour ECG HK$2,750 and echocardiogram HK$2,850; the original Hospital Authority referral letter must be shown, and these fees do not apply to inpatients.
